New project aims to rejuvenate Castle Douglas beauty spot

A new project is set to rejuvenate a Castle Douglas beauty spot as the Loch Ken Trust collaborates with experts from Galloway Fisheries Trust and Scotland’s Rural College to breathe new life into Carlingwark Loch. The initiative has received a grant of nearly £10,000 from the Neighbourhood Ecosystem Fund, administered by Inspiring Scotland.

Concerns have been raised on social media about large sections of lily pads choking the former boating loch, rendering recreational activities impossible. Loch Ken Trust manager, Barnaby Fryer, expressed excitement over securing the funding, emphasising the importance of restoring the ecosystems of Carlingwark Loch correctly as part of the Threave and Carlingwark Loch Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The project involves Galloway Fisheries Trust conducting studies to assess water quality, check for invasive non-native species, and educate the community on how to identify and handle them. Collaborating with Scotland’s Rural College at its Barony campus near Dumfries, Loch Ken Trust aims to develop a new management plan for the loch in consultation with various organisations like NatureScot, National Trust for Scotland, and the RSPB.

Funding for the project comes from the Neighbourhood Ecosystem Fund, supported by the Carman Family Foundation, the Scottish Government’s Nature Restoration Fund through NatureScot, and other contributors. Erica Judge, Director of funds, highlighted the importance of local ecosystem restoration projects and expressed a desire for further investment in such initiatives.

Individuals interested in participating in the Carlingwark Loch project can contact Loch Ken Trust through their website. The project reflects a community-driven effort to revive the natural beauty of the area and underscores the significance of preserving and enhancing local ecosystems for the well-being of people and the environment.
