Lanarkshire Philatelic Society Hosts ‘Argentina Revisited’ Display

The Lanarkshire Philatelic Society recently hosted a captivating display titled ‘Argentina Revisited’ at their latest meeting. Guest speaker Dr. David Cumming took society members on a journey to South America through an in-depth exploration of Argentina’s rich history. Dr. Cumming provided a “fascinating insight” into the country’s past and shared interesting facts with the audience.

During the display, Dr. Cumming showcased a variety of stamps depicting different aspects of Argentina. The collection included stamps from 1936 to 1953 featuring maps displaying the South Adriatic and Antarctic Claims, as well as stamps representing the Argentinian expedition to the South Pole. The display also highlighted the country’s Antarctic bases and explored the economic challenges Argentina faced post the Falklands War in 1982.

Following the economic difficulties, Argentina underwent several currency changes, including the introduction of the Austral in 1985, which later equalled the US Dollar in value before returning to the Peso currency. Despite the economic struggles, Argentina continued to issue stamps, featuring themes such as flower definitives, traditional musical instruments, and tourism, although the frequency of stamp releases decreased over the years.

Society member Walter Simpson expressed gratitude to Dr. Cumming for his engaging presentation and fascinating display. The Lanarkshire Philatelic Society’s upcoming meeting, scheduled for November 8 at Hamilton’s Caledonian Bowling Club, will feature displays by Iain English on Serbia from 1860 to 1918 and Derek Wiltshire on World War 1 in East Africa. Stamp enthusiasts and history buffs are encouraged to attend the event to learn more about stamps, postal history, and postcards.

In conclusion, the ‘Argentina Revisited’ display by the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society provided a unique opportunity for members to delve into the history and culture of Argentina through a philatelic lens. Dr. Cumming’s informative presentation shed light on various aspects of Argentina’s past, offering attendees a glimpse into the country’s rich heritage. Stamp collectors and history enthusiasts alike found the display to be both educational and engaging, further highlighting the society’s commitment to promoting philately as a valuable form of historical exploration and storytelling.
