Dog owner pelted with firework and terrified pet missing after attack in ‘war zone’ Scots town

A dog owner in a Scottish town has been left devastated after being attacked with a firework, causing his terrified pet to go missing. Greg Connelly, 66, recounted the harrowing experience when a thug threw a firework ‘banger’ at him and his two dogs, near the Renfrew Ferry port on October 28. The incident resulted in his wire-haired fox terrier, Millie, running off from the scene.
Describing the town as a “war zone” leading up to Bonfire Night, Greg reported the attack to the police and has been on a week-long search for Millie. Despite his efforts and the use of drones in the search, Millie has not been found. A rescue group from Ayrshire has also offered assistance in locating the missing pet.
Recalling the traumatic moment, Greg shared, “I heard this loud, deafening bang as the firework landed a couple of feet from us. The dogs panicked and Millie ran off. I tried my best to hold onto the leash but she wriggled out of her collar and ran.” The heartbroken owner added, “My biggest fear was her running onto a road and getting killed by a bus or a car.”
Expressing his disbelief at the use of fireworks as ‘weapons’, Greg urged for strong action to be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again. He emphasized the danger posed by fireworks in the wrong hands, not only to pets but also to the safety of people in the community.
Amid the ongoing search for Millie, Greg expressed his shattered state of mind and constant worry for her well-being. He shared, “I’m worried I’ll never see her again and with every day that passes, I’m starting to think she’s gone and she’s not coming home.” Despite the challenges, Greg remains determined to find Millie and bring her back safely.
Police Scotland has confirmed receiving a report of the incident, and efforts are ongoing to locate Millie and ensure the safety of all residents and their pets in the area. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with the irresponsible use of fireworks and the importance of reporting such incidents to prevent future harm.
