Police descend on Edinburgh’s Niddrie neighbourhood ahead of Bonfire Night

Police presence in Edinburgh’s Niddrie area has been significantly increased in anticipation of Bonfire Night. Multiple riot vans and public order officers have been deployed to Niddrie Mains Road and Hay Drive, locations known for past violent incidents on November 5, as reported by Edinburgh Live.

Recent events on Halloween saw officers being attacked by youths wielding fireworks and bricks, resulting in injuries to a female officer amidst the chaos on Hay Drive. Similar disturbances occurred last year, prompting a community lockdown as youths clashed with riot police and vandalised buses. Additional disorderly incidents were reported on Captains Drive in Gracemount and Broomhouse.

Images from Tuesday afternoon show police interacting with local residents and enforcing Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act based on intelligence reports. This measure allows officers to stop and search individuals suspected of planning to cause harm or engage in disorderly conduct. Police will also exercise stop and search powers in Moredun and Gracemount due to increased antisocial behaviour.

Lothian Buses announced the suspension of all services through Niddrie later that day, including routes 2, 12, 14, 21, 30, 46, 48, and 400, citing safety concerns. Additionally, Craigmillar Medical Group announced an early closure with plans to reopen the following day at 8am.

Police Scotland urged the public to report any concerns related to firework-related criminal activities in Moredun, Niddrie, and Gracemount. The community was advised to stay vigilant and cooperate with authorities during this heightened security period.
