Shopkeeper Wrestles with Robber in Store
In an act of bravery, a shopkeeper in Hamilton grappled with a would-be robber who threatened him with a glass bottle and demanded cash. The incident, which took place at the USave shop near the perpetrator’s residence on Old Edinburgh Road, Viewpark, saw Declan McIlduff, 22, attempting to rob the store on February 5 last year. During a court hearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court, it was revealed that McIlduff entered the shop around 5 pm with a white t-shirt covering his face except for his eyes.
Aga Mathieson, the prosecutor, stated that McIlduff placed a carrier bag on the counter and demanded all the change from the till to be put inside it. When the shopkeeper refused, McIlduff escalated the situation by placing a glass bottle on the counter, threatening to harm the shopkeeper if he did not comply. Despite the threats, the shopkeeper stood his ground, pulling down McIlduff’s t-shirt and initiating a struggle to restrain him until the police arrived.
McIlduff, expressing remorse for his actions, apologized to his intended victim following the failed robbery attempt. His defence lawyer, Laura Kiernan, highlighted that McIlduff had no previous criminal record and had since secured full-time employment, indicating positive changes in his life. Sheriff John Speir postponed sentencing to allow for further background reports to be prepared.
