Dumfries and Galloway Rotary Clubs Raise Charity Cash for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support

In a remarkable show of support, Dumfries Devorgilla and Dalbeattie Rotary Clubs have raised an impressive £23,542 for two important causes. The two Rotary Clubs collaborated to host their inaugural Am/Am Charity Golf Tournament at the Southerness Championship links course earlier this year, which turned out to be a resounding success.

A meeting was held at the Holiday Inn in Dumfries, where the proceeds were presented to Bruce Port, the relationship fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, and Mia Noquet, the community and volunteer fundraiser for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Each charity received a generous sum of £11,771 from the fundraising efforts.

Expressing their gratitude, President Bob Carruthers of Dumfries Devorgilla and President Stephen Howie of Dalbeattie thanked everyone involved in organising and supporting the fundraising initiatives. They also extended their appreciation to Southerness Golf Club for their donation of the golfing experience, which contributed to the event’s success.

The funds raised have paved the way for another golf day planned for the upcoming year. Rotarians, friends, and the winning golf team gathered to hear from Bruce Port and Mia Noquet about the impactful work carried out by their respective charities.

Andrew Clark from Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary Club shared insights from Bruce about the invaluable support provided by Macmillan Cancer Support, particularly through the ‘Improving the Cancer Journey’ initiative. This initiative aims to facilitate early engagement with cancer patients through direct links between Macmillan, GPs, and those in need of support.

Highlighting the significance of the donation, Bruce mentioned that the contribution could fund a Macmillan nurse for two months, provide financial grants to 250 individuals seeking cancer support, assist 550 people through the Macmillan Support Line over two days, or reach out to 30,000 individuals via the Macmillan online community service.

On the other hand, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, chosen by Dalbeattie Rotary, focuses on funding research to combat Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Mia shared insights into the devastating effects of MND, emphasizing the urgent need for research to find a cure for this debilitating disease.

With a commitment to allocate 10% of raised funds directly to families and patients, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation has already allocated £18 million for scientific research. Mia expressed optimism about the progress being made in research, drawing hope from scientists who are working towards transformative breakthroughs in the treatment of MND.
