Perth gig to celebrate city musician’s cherished acoustic guitar

A celebratory gig is set to take place in Perth to honour a local musician’s beloved acoustic guitar, with a rich history spanning over five decades. Roger Woods purchased the iconic Fender F-35 at the age of 19 from a renowned music store in Glasgow back in 1974. The guitar has been a constant companion on numerous trips around the globe, from the United States to Spain and Germany. This cherished instrument has now been passed down to Roger’s son Chris, who performs with it in The Mad Ferret Band based in Perthshire.
The Fender F-35, affectionately known as ‘The Old Fender,’ holds a special place in the family’s heart, having been used to compose songs and inspire musicians for generations. Despite its age, Roger believes the guitar still has many tunes left to play. The instrument’s unique patina, acquired from Roger sanding down the lacquer early in its life, holds countless memories of performances and musical creations over the years.
To commemorate the Old Fender’s 50th birthday, a special event will be hosted at The Twa Tams in Scott Street this coming Sunday, November 17. Friends, family, and fellow musicians will gather for a Sunday Social Open Mic session to celebrate the guitar’s milestone. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own instruments and share stories and songs during the event.
The open mic session will run from 3 pm to 8 pm, offering a platform for individuals to showcase their musical talents and even perform on the legendary Old Fender itself. The occasion is not just a birthday celebration but a tribute to the unifying power of music in bringing people together across generations and backgrounds. Admission is free, and individuals under the age of 18 are welcome until 8 pm if accompanied by an adult.
In summary, the upcoming gig in Perth is not just about celebrating a musical instrument but also about honouring the journey, memories, and connections that music can create. It serves as a reminder of how music transcends time and space, touching lives and bringing communities together through shared experiences and melodies. The event promises to be a nostalgic and heartwarming tribute to the enduring legacy of ‘The Old Fender’ and the joy of music that binds us all.
