Renfrew mum leaves pensioner with fractured shoulder after crash

Renfrew Mother Convicted for Causing Fractured Shoulder to Elderly Woman in Car Crash
A Renfrew mother has been found guilty of dangerous driving after hitting a 79-year-old woman with her car, leaving the victim with a fractured shoulder. Danielle Murray was behind the wheel of her Nissan Juke when the incident occurred in Renfrew in November 2022. Murray, residing in Fulbar Street, admitted to driving recklessly by speeding on the opposite side of the road and failing to pay proper attention. The 30-year-old driver cut a corner at a junction, colliding with Margaret Spalding, causing her to fall and sustain a serious shoulder injury.
During the court proceedings at Paisley Sheriff Court, Procurator Fiscal Depute Alyson McLaughlan revealed that both Muir Street and Hairst Street where the accident happened have a speed limit of 30mph. The collision occurred in daylight, albeit with poor visibility due to heavy rainfall. A witness who called for help reported that Mrs. Spalding was unable to get up from the ground due to the pain in her right arm.
Moreover, CCTV footage capturing the entire incident led to a change in Murray’s initial charge from careless driving to dangerous driving. The victim was promptly taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment, where it was confirmed she had suffered a fracture in her right shoulder. Unfortunately, Mrs. Spalding continues to struggle with limited arm mobility and requires ongoing outpatient care to perform daily tasks.
In response to the incident, defence agent James Arrol requested further reports to be prepared on the single mother before her sentencing. Sheriff Gillian Craig subsequently banned Murray from driving and scheduled her sentencing for December 17. This case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of reckless driving and the importance of road safety for all individuals.
