Former Stirling foodbank volunteers come together for vital Christmas effort

Former Stirling foodbank volunteers have reunited to spearhead a crucial Christmas initiative, as reported by the Daily Record. Despite the recent announcement of the closure of a local hub, volunteers are determined to continue distributing free food on Christmas Eve. Transition Stirling, the organization behind the Community Food Project, revealed its decision to cease operations after over four years of service in Wellgreen Lane in Stirling city centre. The project focused on reducing food waste by collecting surplus food from nearby supermarkets and offering it to the community for free.

While the closure of the free section of Stirling Community Food was cited as no longer sustainable, reports have emerged that some volunteers are collaborating with a local businessman to organise a one-off distribution of surplus food on Christmas Eve from the hub location. Azam Haider Bhatti has confirmed plans for a Christmas food bank at 5 Wellgreen Lane on December 24, with the aim of ensuring that everyone has food and a memorable Christmas. This initiative, named Stirling Aid Christmas Community Food, aims to provide free food donations from local businesses and supermarkets to support community members during challenging economic times.

Members of the local community, including former Transition Community Food project staff and volunteers, have come together to make this event possible. They are working alongside Azam Haider Bhatti to reopen the community food hub building for this special distribution. The Community Food Project previously served an average of 80 people per day, four days a week, diverting 740 tonnes of food waste from landfills. Transition Stirling will continue operating its discounted food project The Pantry from new premises, while other Wellgreen projects, such as the Tool Library, ReBoot, and community events, will remain active.

To support, donate, or participate in the Christmas Eve distribution, individuals can contact christmascommunityfood@gmail.com or call 07793443437. Despite facing challenges, the spirit of community and generosity prevails as volunteers and local businesses unite to ensure that those in need have access to essential resources during the festive season.
