Christmas lights are being switched on across South Lanarkshire this weekend

Christmas lights are set to illuminate various locations across South Lanarkshire this weekend. The festive spirit is in full swing as communities gear up for a series of events to mark the holiday season. The countdown to Christmas is well underway, with the switch-on events scheduled to take place across the region. Lanark and East Kilbride have already kicked off the celebrations with their lights shining brightly. This weekend, Rutherglen will have its turn as the lights are set to be switched on at 4.30pm on Saturday, November 23. Simultaneously, Hamilton will host its Christmas Light Switch-On event on Quarry Street from 10am to 5.30pm on the same day.
The festive celebrations in Hamilton will include a market, a visit from Santa, and a joyous Christmas Parade starting from Castle Street at around 2.30pm. The following day, Cambuslang will follow suit with its lights being turned on at 4.30pm on Sunday, November 24. Carluke will wrap up the series of light switch-on events on Saturday, November 30, at 5pm. Festivities at these events will be heightened with performances from popular acts such as Mac*Busted and The MacDonald Bros, adding to the holiday cheer.
Each council-run event will feature entertainment for all ages, including Soundsational Choir, street entertainers, and beloved kids characters. Well-known personalities like Des Clarke from Heart FM will be hosting most of the events, with special guests joining Provost Margaret Cooper or Depute Provost Bert Thomson on stage for the ceremonial light switch-on. The aim is to spread Christmas joy and create a memorable experience for the community.
