Scots baby switches on Christmas lights at hospital he’s called home since birth

In heartwarming news, a baby boy named Gabriel Sebastian had the honour of switching on the Christmas lights at the hospital where he has resided since birth. The 17-month-old has never set foot in his family home and has spent his entire life at Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. Gabriel was faced with slim odds of survival at birth after being diagnosed with Spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia in the womb, a rare condition affecting his bone development in his spine, ribs, arms, and legs. Doctors remain unsure if Gabriel will ever achieve independent breathing.

Gabriel’s mother, Teena Thomas, recounted the emotional journey of Gabriel’s birth and subsequent hospital stay. Despite the challenges, Gabriel’s resilience shines through as he continues to smile through his treatments and medical procedures. The infant has undergone multiple surgeries, including being intubated soon after birth due to breathing difficulties. Teena expressed gratitude for the hospital charity that has provided moments of joy for Gabriel during his extended hospital stay.

Parents Teena and Sebastian Paul, along with Hibs captain Joe Newell, gathered on November 25th for the hospital’s Christmas light switch-on ceremony. Gabriel gleefully pressed the button to illuminate the hospital grounds adorned with a 20ft Christmas tree. Teena shared her appreciation for the hospital staff and the support they have received, acknowledging that Gabriel’s future remains uncertain.

Pippa Johnston, Deputy CEO of Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity, commended Gabriel and his family for contributing to the festive event and described Gabriel as a “little star in every sense of the word.” Despite the challenges ahead, the family remains hopeful and encourages others to remember children like Gabriel who will spend the holiday season in hospital. The touching story of Gabriel demonstrates the power of resilience and the importance of cherishing moments of happiness amidst adversity.
