New £36m Blairgowrie Recreation Centre to open early next year

A new £36 million Blairgowrie Recreation Centre is set to open early next year, becoming Scotland’s first ultra-low energy swimming pool and recreation centre. The centre is a replacement for the existing Blairgowrie Recreation Centre and is on track to open ahead of schedule to avoid disruption to Blairgowrie High School’s prelim timetable. The new building has been constructed while the old facility is still in use, with plans to begin demolition once the new centre is operational.

The progress on the project was recently updated to the Perth and Kinross Council’s Finance and Resources Committee, confirming that the centre’s construction is progressing as planned. The head of Property Services, Stephen Crawford, expressed confidence that the centre will be open to the public early in the new year. Local councillor Tom McEwan commended the team behind the development for their work on this unique Passivhaus project, which will benefit the community of East Perthshire.

Fellow councillor Caroline Shiers also praised the team for their responsiveness to the local community’s queries and for overcoming challenges during the construction process. The new Blairgowrie Recreation Centre will feature a variety of facilities including a 25m swimming pool, sports halls, fitness suite, dance studio, changing facilities, offices, and a PE classroom. This state-of-the-art centre will cater to both the local community and Blairgowrie High School.

In conclusion, the new Blairgowrie Recreation Centre signifies a significant milestone in Scotland’s leisure and recreation infrastructure. The energy-efficient design and modern facilities will provide a valuable resource for the local community and school, promoting health, wellbeing, and sports participation. The early opening of the centre demonstrates effective project management and collaboration between stakeholders to deliver a facility that meets the needs of the community.
