Man arrested as Manchester bombing tributes that killed Scots schoolgirl damaged

A 20-year-old man has been arrested after causing damage to tributes left for the victims of the Manchester Arena bomb attack, which claimed the life of a Scots 13-year-old schoolgirl. The incident, described as ‘disgusting’, occurred at the AO car park at Manchester Victoria, where the man was reported to have broken glass and a traffic cone at 3.40pm on Sunday. Not only was property damaged, but tributes to the 22 victims of the tragic attack in May 2017 were also affected. The suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of criminal damage and burglary and remains under questioning.
The 2017 terrorist attack, carried out by Salman Abedi at an Ariana Grande concert, resulted in the loss of Eilidh MacLeod, a 13-year-old with a bright spirit from the Isle of Barra. Eilidh was remembered for her talents in the pipe band and described as a lovely young woman by her father, while her mother highlighted her quirky personality that endeared her to many. The arrest has been met with condemnation, with Detective Superintendent Sarah Harris stating that such behaviour disrupting the lives of people and desecrating tributes to the victims is unacceptable.
The Manchester Arena bombing remains a poignant and tragic event in the hearts of many, and any actions that disrespect the memory of those lost are met with zero tolerance. The community is reassured that efforts are underway to understand the situation fully, with the public urged to provide any information that could aid the investigation. The families of the victims have been informed of the incident, and steps have been taken to restore the affected area to its peaceful state.
