Mum left note saying ‘I was murdered’ before taking her own life after ‘campaign of abuse’

A mother tragically took her own life after leaving a heartbreaking note stating she had been murdered, following an alleged ‘campaign of abuse’. Kiena Dawes, 23, disappeared in July 2022 after leaving her nine-month-old daughter with a friend in Fleetwood, Lancashire, driving 17 miles to park near a railway line. The Preston Crown Court heard that Kiena was struck and killed by a train, and her ex-fiancé, Ryan Wellings, 30, is on trial accused of her manslaughter. The prosecution alleges that Wellings subjected Kiena to controlling and coercive behaviour, violence, and abuse, which significantly impacted her decision to end her own life.
The court was presented with a suicide note left by Kiena on her phone, where she detailed the torment she endured, stating, “I was murdered. Slowly. They tortured me, till there was nothing left.” Kiena blamed Wellings for her death in the note and expressed her desire for her daughter to be kept away from him. The prosecution argued that Wellings’ actions led to Kiena’s tragic outcome, citing a pattern of abusive behaviour and physical assaults. Wellings denies the charges of controlling and coercive behaviour, assault, and manslaughter, claiming that their relationship was loving and that Kiena’s mental health issues may have influenced her decision.
