Woman broke kid’s collarbone after shoving her off trampoline she didn’t want to share

A woman has been convicted of breaking a five-year-old child’s collarbone by pushing her off a trampoline that she did not want to share. Jamie-Lee Ferguson, 24, was found guilty at Perth Sheriff Court of shoving the young girl from the edge of the raised trampoline onto the ground several feet below. The incident occurred when Ferguson was in the center of the trampoline and the child was outside the safety net, walking along the outer edge, before being forcibly pushed off.

Fiscal depute Kate Scarborough explained in court that the child sustained a fractured collarbone as a result of the fall. The incident was captured on footage showing Ferguson pushing the child through the netting, causing her to land on the ground. The child was taken to the accident and emergency department, where she was diagnosed with a closed fracture. Despite not requiring extensive treatment, she had to wear a sling for a period of time.

After the matter was reported to the police, Ferguson, from Perth, was charged with assault and admitted to culpable and reckless conduct during the incident. Her solicitor, Steve Lafferty, described the event as a regrettable accident, attributing it to high spirits and a sudden push that Ferguson could not explain. The court heard that the child complained of pain the day after the incident and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.

In sentencing, Sheriff William Gilchrist decided to place Ferguson under social work supervision for six months, considering the recommendations from the background report. Despite acknowledging the seriousness of the matter, the sheriff noted Ferguson’s remorse and limited prior record. Ferguson expressed her regret for the incident, acknowledging her wrongdoing and lack of understanding regarding the consequences of her actions.

In light of this unfortunate event, it is crucial for adults to exercise caution and responsibility when interacting with children to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Children’s safety should always be a top priority, and proper supervision and care are essential to avoid any harm or injury. Parents and guardians must ensure that recreational activities are conducted in a safe and controlled manner to protect the well-being of young individuals.
