Lockerbie: A Search for Truth photographer ‘had chills’ driving past town

A photographer involved in the production of a new drama focusing on the Lockerbie air disaster has opened up about the emotional impact of revisiting the town. Graeme Hunter worked as the unit stills photographer on Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, set to premiere on Sky in January. Having experienced the tragedy as an apprentice on the day Pan Am 103 exploded over Lockerbie in 1988, resulting in 270 deaths, Hunter revealed that the town still evokes strong emotions when he passes by.

While he did not cover the tragedy itself, Hunter did capture images of Dr Jim Swire, whose daughter, Flora, was a victim of the disaster. The five-part series revolves around Dr Swire’s relentless pursuit of justice. Hunter described his interactions with Dr Swire as a significant part of his life, resonating with the entire Scottish community and leaving a lasting impact.

He recounted the somber atmosphere that lingers in Lockerbie, noting the sadness that still envelops the town. Hunter expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness Dr Swire’s journey and emphasized the importance of shedding light on lesser-known aspects of the Lockerbie story through the upcoming drama.

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, based on a book co-authored by Dr Swire, is scheduled to premiere on Sky Atlantic and NOW on January 2. The series stars Oscar-winner Colin Firth as Dr Jim Swire, with Catherine McCormack portraying his wife, Jane. Hunter highlighted the depth and insight of the drama, sharing that filming certain scenes left him deeply affected by the poignant conversations and revelations depicted.

The upcoming series aims to provide viewers with a new perspective on the Lockerbie tragedy, delving into Dr Swire’s personal journey and his interactions with various stakeholders involved in the aftermath of the disaster. Hunter expressed his admiration for the production’s ability to capture the emotional intensity of the story while offering a glimpse into Dr Swire’s intimate conversations and struggles for justice.

As all episodes of Lockerbie: A Search for Truth are set to be available on Sky Atlantic and the streaming service NOW from January 2, audiences can anticipate a compelling and thought-provoking narrative that honours the memory of the victims while shedding light on the ongoing quest for truth and justice in the wake of the Lockerbie tragedy.
