The parents of a toddler from the US are facing serious charges after their two-year-old daughter was found dead in a closet with a space heater that caused temperatures to reach up to 109 degrees Fahrenheit. Sintia Perez, 21, and Jace Hirschy, 23, from Indiana, were arrested on November 27 and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, along with two counts each of neglect of a dependent.

The tragic incident unfolded when emergency services responded to a death investigation at the Swiss Meadows Apartments on November 27, 2024. Upon arrival, officers discovered the toddler in a closet with a space heater, where the room temperature had risen significantly. The toddler was found on a dirty mattress, wearing only a nappy, with her body discoloured, and feces were also found in the room.

According to court documents, the young girl’s body temperature measured 109.4 degrees Fahrenheit at the scene, with an autopsy confirming hyperthermia as the cause of death. The parents admitted to putting the toddler to bed with the space heater on and failing to check on her until the next afternoon when they found her lifeless.

Perez and Hirschy were taken into custody, and their other two children, aged five and three, were placed under the care of the Department of Child Services after being found infested with lice. The couple is currently held at Adams County Jail, with legal proceedings scheduled for early 2025.
