Yob who brandished air gun at shop staff after they refused to sell him pellets

A man who wielded an air gun at shop staff in response to them refusing to sell him pellets has been handed an 18-month supervision order. Jay Gibb, 22, was found carrying a knife when apprehended by police. At Hamilton Sheriff Court, Gibb was directed to seek addiction counselling as part of his sentence. This incident occurred at Home Essentials in Quarry Street, Hamilton, just two days after Gibb had been granted bail at the same court.

Prosecutor Neil Thomson recounted the events, stating that Gibb had entered the shop and requested gun pellets, claiming he intended to harm himself. When the shopkeeper declined to sell him the pellets, Gibb became agitated, shouting and swearing at the staff. He then produced a BB gun, cocked the weapon, and waved it at the employees before exiting the premises. Police officers later located Gibb in Larkhall, where they discovered the BB gun and a knife with a four-inch blade in his possession.

During his court appearance, Gibb’s defence lawyer, Gregor Jarrott, acknowledged his client’s guilty plea to serious charges and highlighted his struggles with mental health. The court learned that Gibb had been in custody since his arrest earlier in the year. Sheriff Liam Murphy expressed empathy for the shop staff, describing the ordeal as a frightening experience for them.
