Police Release New CCTV Footage As Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Investigation Intensifies

The mystery surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has taken another turn after U.S. Park Police released surveillance footage tied to an investigation into alleged damage at one of America’s most recognizable landmarks.
Authorities are asking the public to help identify a person seen near the recently renovated pool, as questions continue over what caused the site’s reported damage and whether vandalism played a role.

Police Release Surveillance Images
The U.S. Park Police published CCTV images and video captured on June 19, showing an individual kneeling beside the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at around 3:30 p.m. The person appears to reach into the water before leaving the area.
Officials have not identified the individual as a suspect or disclosed their gender. Instead, investigators said they are seeking to identify the person as part of an ongoing destruction of government property investigation.
Anyone with information has been asked to contact the U.S. Park Police Tip Line.
Investigation Continues
The release marks the first time authorities have shared surveillance footage connected to the investigation. While officials have confirmed the inquiry remains active, they have not publicly presented evidence showing how the individual seen in the footage is linked to the reported damage.
That has fueled continued debate over what happened to the recently renovated landmark.

Trump Says The Pool Was “Gruesomely Vandalized”
President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that the Reflecting Pool suffered extensive vandalism after reopening.
According to Trump, the damage included cuts to the pool’s lining and the use of chemicals. He also claimed there was a 350-foot cut in the liner that may have been made using a knife or similar object.
Speaking to supporters, Trump later said he had revisited the memorial and found it looking “perfect,” adding that those responsible had “largely been caught and are being prosecuted.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also defended the administration’s claims, saying multiple arrests and police reports showed the vandalism was “very real.”
Despite those statements, officials have not publicly released evidence confirming the specific damage described by the president.

Court Documents Reveal Additional Damage
A federal court filing submitted on June 24 by National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands outlined several forms of damage identified at the site.
According to the filing, officials found:
- Foam sealant cut with what appeared to be a sharp knife or razor
- Damage to sections of surface material
- Around 70 fence post tops thrown into the reflecting pool
- Additional repairs planned after the Fourth of July
The filing also states that the Reflecting Pool will be drained so crews can inspect the basin more closely and determine whether the lining requires further repairs.

Why The Pool Is Being Drained
Officials said draining the pool will allow engineers to examine damage hidden beneath the water’s surface.
The inspection is expected to determine whether repairs extend beyond the visible surface issues that have drawn public attention in recent weeks.
Problems Began Soon After Renovation
The controversy comes only weeks after the Reflecting Pool reopened following a fast-tracked renovation ordered by President Trump.
The project resurfaced the basin with a blue coating after Trump argued the landmark had become dirty and neglected.
However, the reopening quickly ran into problems.
Within days, algae blooms turned parts of the water green. Visitors also photographed sections of the new coating peeling away from the bottom of the pool and floating on the surface.
The administration has suggested vandalism contributed to those issues, although some experts have pointed to other possible explanations.
Experts Point To Several Possible Causes
Specialists have suggested multiple factors could explain the problems seen after reopening, including:
- Residual algae left behind before reopening
- Water chemistry changes
- High surface temperatures
- Moisture trapped beneath the coating
- Adhesion problems during installation
- Environmental stress

At this stage, investigators have not publicly concluded which factors caused the damage.
Security Around The Memorial Has Increased
The investigation has also brought tighter security to one of Washington’s busiest tourist destinations.
Visitors have been warned they could face citations or detention for entering the Reflecting Pool or interfering with the water.
Temporary fencing has also been installed around parts of the memorial ahead of Independence Day celebrations.
The Interior Department said the fencing was always planned because fireworks launch sites are located nearby. Officials added that reports of vandalism prompted crews to install barriers earlier than originally scheduled.
Lawmakers Question The Renovation Project
While police continue investigating the reported vandalism, lawmakers are also examining how the renovation itself was handled.
Several Democratic lawmakers have questioned the awarding of a no-bid contract for the project, as well as the rising costs and the rapid appearance of construction problems.
Senator Richard Blumenthal has requested records relating to the contract, saying the public deserves answers about how taxpayer money was spent.
Senator John Hickenlooper has called the renovation a “national embarrassment” and urged Congress to investigate the project further.
Representative Robert Garcia has also sought documents from contractors involved, raising concerns about procurement practices and reports of peeling coatings and algae growth.
Questions Still Await Answers
Several issues remain unresolved as investigators continue their work:
- Whether the surveillance footage shows someone connected to the reported damage
- What caused the coating failures after reopening
- Whether vandalism, construction issues, or environmental conditions played the largest role
- How much the repairs will ultimately cost taxpayers
Officials have not announced when the investigation will conclude.
A Historic Landmark Remains Under Scrutiny
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool attracts millions of visitors every year and serves as one of the nation’s most recognizable public spaces.
As repairs move forward and investigators review surveillance footage, authorities continue asking anyone who recognizes the individual shown in the released images to come forward.
For now, the investigation remains active, while separate questions surrounding the renovation project, contracting process, and long-term condition of the Reflecting Pool continue to draw public attention.
