Ancient Maya Dentists Used Antibiotic Cement to Set Jade Teeth and It Still Holds After 1,000 Years

Marco Ramírez-Salomón is an orthodontist in Yucatán, and the teeth on his table stopped chewing more than a thousand years ago.
He lines up a small disc of green stone with the hole drilled into the front of one of them. He presses.
“Some of these inlays are so precise that when you put it in a tooth, you can hear a click,” he told National Geographic.
Ten centuries in the ground, and the two pieces still find each other.
What held them together is the part that sent chemists back to the lab. The answer is stranger than you would guess, and more carefully hedged than the headlines around it.
The Stone That Never Came Out
During the Classic period, roughly A.D. 250 to 900, people across what is now Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and southern Mexico had jade and pyrite set into their front teeth. It was status. It was beauty. It was far out of reach for most.
Here is the number worth pausing on. More than half of the modified teeth recovered from Maya archaeological sites still have their stones in them.
Not lying loose beside them in the soil. Still seated in the cavity, still held by the original cement, after a thousand years of burial, shifting soil chemistry and groundwater.
Modern dentistry does not even aim at that horizon.
Somebody Was Awake for This
The drilling went through enamel and into dentine, and it stopped short of the pulp, the soft nerve tissue at the center of the tooth. Miss that line and you have an abscess instead of an ornament.
Electron microscopy of the cavities shows rounded tool marks that point to some kind of rudimentary drill. No such tool has ever been dug up. We know it existed only because of the marks it left behind.
Dental anthropologist Elma Vega-Lizama, looking into one of those cavities, called it “so perfect.”
And these were living mouths. A cone beam CT scan through one inlaid tooth found calcification inside the pulp chamber, the signature of tissue that reacted to being drilled and then went on healing.
Someone felt every second of that, and got up afterward.
The Recipe Nobody Wrote Down

In 2022, a team led by biochemist Gloria Hernández Bolio, at Mexico’s Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute, put eight of these ancient sealants under infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography.
Out came roughly 150 organic molecules.
Most of it was plant resin, heavily pine. Two samples carried sclareolide, a compound from Salvia plants with antibacterial and antifungal properties. Samples from the Copán region held essential oils from the mint family, the kind associated with anti-inflammatory effects.
“Each ingredient has a specific task,” Hernández Bolio said.
Then the numbers did something lovely. The eight samples sorted into four groups by geography. As Archaeology Magazine reported, “the sealants’ contents varied based on location, suggesting that local practitioners had their own recipes.”
Four regions. Four house blends. Someone in Copán mixed it their way, and someone hundreds of miles off mixed it theirs.
What “Antibiotic” Actually Means Here

Now the honest part, because the internet has run out ahead of the science on this one.
Nobody has demonstrated that this cement fought infection in ancient mouths. What the study established is that the sealants contain compounds which, in separate research, show antibacterial and antifungal activity. That is a real and genuinely interesting finding. It is not proof of a working ancient antibiotic.
Hernández Bolio said as much herself. The most important factor in creating the sealants, she noted, was their binding properties. Any germ fighting effect may well have been a bonus the Maya noticed rather than the goal they designed for.
The glue is the proven marvel. The medicine is the promising hypothesis.
The Molar That Broke the Rule

Then, in April 2026, a lower left first molar landed in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports and scrambled the picture.
Inlays turn up almost exclusively in front teeth, for the obvious reason. This one sat in a chewing surface, deep in the back of the mouth, holding a small green stone that is likely jadeite.
“Molar teeth are not visible during speech or display,” the researchers wrote.
So why do it, if nobody would ever see it? The team, including bioarchaeologist Andrea Cucina, floated a practical answer: pain, decay, a failing tooth in a maize heavy diet. That would make it therapeutic dentistry, a thousand years early.
They are careful about it, and so should we be. There is no clear cavity damage at the inlay site. Their own paper calls the interpretations speculative. Dental historian Roger Forshaw, reviewing it from outside, allowed that the health theory is “plausible” and left it there.
One tooth is a question, not an answer.
Children Wore It Too

The other 2026 surprise came from three loose teeth in the Popol Vuh Museum in Guatemala City, each set with jade, each belonging to a child between about seven and ten years old.
Researchers could tell from the root tips, still open and unsealed, the way a child’s permanent teeth are before they finish forming.
Scholars had long assumed this was late adolescent or adult work, a rite tied to coming of age. Small children in the chair hints at something else, perhaps a marker of childhood itself.
Three teeth with no recorded find site is thin evidence, and the researchers say so plainly. As one summary of the work put it, the idea “stays a possibility rather than a settled explanation.”
What the Tooth Still Says
Strip away the jade and the journals and what is left is a person in a chair.
They sat still. They opened their mouth. They let someone cut into a living tooth on purpose, because the green stone said something about who they were, and they wanted it said.
Whoever mixed the cement that held it had no chemistry, no microscope, no name for the molecules going into the bowl. They had trees, plants, and generations of watching what held and what let go. That is what the evidence will actually carry: not a lost antibiotic, but a craft refined by patient observation until it outlasted the world that perfected it.
Ten centuries later, the stone has not moved.
