Banish back pain and get best night’s rest with specific sleeping position

A woman has shared a simple trick that can help you drift off to sleep in a way that won’t leave you with aches and pains in the morning – but you will need some extra equipment.
The way you sleep could be causing your back pain. We all know that regular movement is key to preventing discomfort in certain areas, with prolonged sitting often blamed for back issues – particularly if our posture isn’t up to scratch. This is especially true for those of us working office jobs or from home, where we might find ourselves hunched over our keyboards.
But did you realise that your sleeping position can also contribute to back pain? You might think there’s no harm in curling up under the duvet or sprawling out on your back, but some sleeping positions can lead to waking up with aches and pains.
However, there is a solution to ensure you get the best night’s sleep for your back – and all you need are a couple of spare pillows to support key parts of your body. According to a TikTok user named Stace, achieving “optimal sleep” involves drifting off in a position that keeps your neck, shoulders, and lower back pain-free throughout the night.
Firstly, Stace informed followers that it’s best to use a pillow which has a “natural curvature” for neck support. But the tips didn’t end there. To avoid shoulder strain while snoozing on your side, you should take another pillow, fold it and envelop it in a hug, imitating a “cuddling” action; this prevents your shoulders from hunching over excessively.
The critical pillow for those suffering lower back discomfort is the third one, which you should place between your knees, ensuring your spine remains even and stopping your back from twisting during slumber. Stace acknowledged that the recommended sleep setup is “really comfortable,” despite its seemingly odd appearance, playfully questioning, “Who is sleeping like this?”
Viewers of her video also highlighted that rather than three distinct pillows, one may opt for a body or pregnancy pillow – also known as a bolster pillow. This lengthy, cylindrical cushion offers simultaneous support for the head, shoulders, and knees. Such pillows are also beneficial for expectant mothers, helping to keep them from unintentionally rolling onto their bellies.
Sleep gurus at Downland Bedding tout the benefits of bolster pillows, or resting with three pillows, as a way to enhance spine alignment by supporting its natural curve. Their advice: “This helps to reduce the strain on your lower back and hips, promoting overall spinal health. If you’re a side sleeper, placing a bolster between your legs can also help to maintain proper alignment of your spine, hips, and knees, providing comfort and support throughout the night.”
In summary, getting a good night’s sleep is crucial for our overall health and well-being, and it’s important to pay attention to our sleeping positions to avoid waking up with aches and pains. By using specific pillows strategically placed to support our neck, shoulders, and lower back, we can ensure a more comfortable and restful sleep. Consider investing in a body or pregnancy pillow for added support and alignment. Prioritising proper sleep hygiene can lead to improved quality of life and better overall health.
