A 25-year-old woman’s battle with stage 4 bowel cancer has highlighted the importance of recognising common symptoms of the disease. Ellie Wilcock, from Peterborough, initially mistook her abdominal pains and fatigue for a urinary tract infection (UTI) before being diagnosed with the most severe grade of bowel cancer in 2022.

Wilcock, who works as a content manager, described experiencing sharp abdominal pains on her left side, which doctors initially attributed to issues with her reproductive system or an ovarian cyst. However, further investigation revealed the true severity of her condition as the cancer had spread throughout her body.

In addition to abdominal pain, Wilcock experienced frequent changes in bowel habits, alternating between diarrhoea and constipation, as well as debilitating fatigue. She also noticed blood in her stool, a key warning sign of bowel cancer. Reflecting on her experience, Wilcock emphasised the importance of not ignoring unusual symptoms and seeking medical advice promptly.

According to the NHS, symptoms such as persistent fatigue, breathlessness, and headaches could indicate anaemia caused by bowel cancer. Despite initially attributing her symptoms to a UTI, Wilcock eventually sought medical help, leading to a stage 4 bowel cancer diagnosis that had spread to her ovaries, liver, and peritoneum.

After undergoing multiple operations, Wilcock received the all-clear in August, highlighting the significance of early detection and treatment. She shared her journey to raise awareness about bowel cancer and encourage others to be vigilant about their health.

With bowel cancer rates rising among individuals under 50, it is crucial for people to be aware of the common symptoms and seek medical advice if they experience any concerning signs.
