In a significant development for Langholm’s Muckle Toon, talks have been successfully finalised between Buccleuch Estates and the Castleholm Community Trust Limited for the historic transfer of Castleholm into community ownership. The Castleholm ground, steeped in history and integral to community events in Dumfriesshire, has long been utilised by the public under the permission of Buccleuch Estates for activities ranging from Langholm Common Riding to sports events like horse racing and cricket.
This week, it was formally announced that an 18.12-hectare portion of Castleholm will now be owned and managed by the local community. As part of the transfer agreement, Buccleuch Estates has indicated that existing users of Castleholm will retain access for their events and activities, with the stipulation that the space is to be used exclusively for activities directly benefiting the local community. Ed Morris, Borders Estate director at Buccleuch, expressed delight in collaborating with the Castleholm Community Trust Limited team, commending their efforts to bring about community ownership of Castleholm.
Over a series of public consultations, Castleholm Community Trust Limited laid out their vision for the area, garnering significant support from the community, with over 50% expressing their backing for the change in ownership. Roger Maxwell, chairman of the trust, conveyed his delight at the successful completion of the transfer, extending gratitude to Buccleuch for their support and generosity throughout the negotiations. He emphasised that while community ownership secures the future of Castleholm as a focal point for local activities, it also places the responsibility for its maintenance and development squarely in the hands of the community.
