Consultation on move for Falkirk school from building ‘not fit for purpose’

Falkirk Council is considering a move for a school that caters to pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs due to the current building being deemed “not fit for purpose”. The council’s executive has agreed to initiate a consultation on relocating the Inclusion & Wellbeing Service (IWBS) from its current site in Laurieston to Langlees. This move would involve transferring the service to the Dawson Centre and the Excellence in Childcare building in Langlees, which are currently used as community facilities.

The decision comes as both the Dawson Centre and the Excellence in Childcare building are set to face closure in April as part of the council’s property review. While there were discussions about a community takeover of the Excellence in Childcare building, it did not progress. However, community groups will still have access to these facilities outside of school hours if the move goes ahead.

The existing Laurieston campus is reported to have significant maintenance issues, with an estimated £2.4 million backlog, while the changes required at the Dawson campus are expected to cost around £800,000. Comparatively, the properties in Langlees are in better condition, more accessible, and more energy-efficient. They also offer outdoor space and sports facilities, which are lacking at the current IWBS site.

Moving to Langlees would provide the IWBS with improved facilities, including separate primary and secondary classrooms, dedicated nurture and support areas, and shared facility management with Langlees Primary. The transition for the 12 primary and 20 secondary pupils currently attending the school is planned to be gradual and seamless.

The consultation period will run from November 11 to December 23, with a public meeting scheduled for November 26 at the Dawson Centre. The move has received unanimous support from councillors, highlighting the benefits of a modern and purpose-built facility for delivering essential services to children and young people in the community.

In summary, Falkirk Council is exploring the relocation of a school supporting pupils with additional needs to a more suitable facility in Langlees, addressing maintenance issues and providing improved amenities. The move aims to enhance service delivery and outcomes for children, with a focus on creating a conducive learning environment for all students involved.
