Domestic abuser dies in prison while awaiting sentence

A man who was awaiting sentencing on domestic abuse charges has died in prison, the Scottish Prison Service confirmed. Kristopher Kerrigan, 36, from Pine Grove, Calderbank, passed away at HMP Addiewell in West Lothian on November 26. As is standard procedure for all prison deaths, a fatal accident inquiry will be conducted in the future.

Kerrigan had admitted to charges in October and was set to be sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court before his death. The court heard about the physical and verbal abuse his partner endured due to derogatory comments he made, leading to weight loss and anxiety. The abuse occurred at Kerrigan’s home, as well as addresses in Hamilton and Blantyre over a period from 2019 to 2023.

Additionally, Kerrigan pleaded guilty to failing to attend court and sending abusive and threatening messages to the woman between July 31 and August 31 of this year. His behaviour included pouring water over her and making violent threats. Despite being arrested upon his return from Greece in September, Kerrigan failed to stand trial earlier due to his absence.

Describing the relationship between Kerrigan and his partner as “toxic,” his defence lawyer acknowledged the abhorrent nature of the messages sent but claimed they were not indicative of his client’s intentions to carry out the threats. The case sheds light on the devastating impact of domestic abuse and the importance of addressing such issues within society.

Summarily, the tragic passing of Kristopher Kerrigan in prison highlights the urgent need for awareness and action to combat domestic abuse, protect victims, and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
