Double success for North Lanarkshire Council’s housing team at awards ceremony

North Lanarkshire Council celebrated a double win at the Chartered Institute of Housing Scottish Awards, where their housing team was honoured with two prestigious accolades. The council’s Ukrainian Resettlement Team was awarded Housing Team of the Year, while Connall Smith, a quantity surveyor graduate apprentice, clinched the title of Apprentice of the Year. The CIH Scottish Housing Awards, held in Glasgow, recognize outstanding housing teams and professionals for their impactful contributions to local communities.
In response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, North Lanarkshire Council established the Ukrainian resettlement team to assist families seeking refuge. The team repurposed empty properties awaiting demolition to provide homes for approximately 200 displaced families. Beyond housing, the team also extended support in education, health services, and social work to aid in the resettlement process and community integration for the displaced families.
Connall Smith, the Apprentice of the Year recipient, is currently pursuing a four-year graduate apprenticeship course at Glasgow Caledonian University. His dedication and commitment to his role as a quantity surveyor apprentice with the new supply team have been exemplary. Connall has actively engaged in mentoring activities, site visits, valuations, and project cost management, showcasing his professional growth and community involvement.
Councillor Michael McPake, the Housing convener, expressed his delight at the recognition received by the housing team and highlighted their innovative initiatives and dedication to delivering exceptional services. He commended the team for their efforts in providing a safe and supportive environment for the displaced families, emphasizing the council’s values of fairness, respect, equality, and excellence.
The council’s proactive response to the crisis in Ukraine reflects their commitment to supporting those in need and fostering community cohesion. The success of both the Ukrainian Resettlement Team and Connall Smith underscores North Lanarkshire Council’s ongoing dedication to serving the local community and making a positive impact in the housing sector.
