Economic advisor to give Dumfries speech


Dr Gary Gillespie, the chief economic advisor to the Scottish Government, will be presenting a speech in Dumfries as part of the Crichton Conversations series. The event will take place at the Gilchrist Room in Easterbrook Hall on Bankend Road. The topic of the lecture will be “Does structural economic change accelerate in times of crises? Are we in such a period and what does it imply for all parts of Scotland?” The event is sponsored by Scotland’s Rural College and is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26, from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. Doors will open at 6.30 pm, and tea and coffee will be available for attendees.

Mr Andrew Walls, the Crichton Foundation Convenor, expressed his anticipation for Dr Gillespie’s lecture, stating, “Who better to tackle this important and challenging subject than the chief economic adviser to the Scottish Government? I hope you will be able to join us.” Dr Gillespie has been serving as the director and chief economic adviser to the Scottish Government since 2011. He provides insights on strategic economic issues to the First Minister and Ministers and offers regular assessments of the State of the Economy, analyzing key impacts such as EU Exit, Covid, supply chain disruption, and inflation on the Scottish and UK economies.

Dr Gillespie is actively engaged in economic discussions at national and international levels and leads the Wellbeing Economy Government (WEGo) network, focusing on sharing best practices for international change. Alongside Dr Gillespie, Dr Matthew Agarwala, who previously gave a successful talk as part of the Crichton Conversations series, will also be present at the event.
