Falkirk Council’s planning committee faced criticism for being a “waste of time” as decisions on key applications were postponed, leaving councillors, staff, and the public frustrated. The delay in deciding whether to build holiday homes and a restaurant near the Black Loch in Limerigg means that a resolution will not be reached until at least January. SNP councillor Gary Bouse expressed concerns about the process as numerous council officers, councillors, and members of the public gathered for a brief ten-minute meeting at the Grangemouth Community Education Unit.

Bouse highlighted the inefficiency of the current procedure, questioning if there was a way to streamline the process to avoid unnecessary travel and resource wastage. The meeting was set to discuss an application from the RWD group to develop the former Black Loch Fishery, with an agent present to speak on their behalf. However, due to regulations requiring decisions on site visits to be made collectively by the committee, any potential resolution had to be postponed. This left many disappointed, including applicants and councillors hoping to voice their opinions.

Councillor James Kerr raised concerns about the extensive delays in processing planning applications, emphasising the impact on people’s lives waiting for decisions. The next committee meeting is scheduled for January, further prolonging the uncertainty for those involved in the applications under review. Additionally, an application to build two industrial units in Denny was also deferred, affecting the applicant, Chris Verrechia, and local councillor Brian McCabe.

Convener Billy Buchanan acknowledged the frustration and suggested a review of procedures to enhance efficiency in future meetings. The lengthy delays and procedural challenges faced by the planning committee have sparked calls for improvements to be made to expedite decision-making processes and reduce inconveniences for all parties involved.
