Family dispute led to man battering uncle with metal bar

In a recent incident at Airdrie Sheriff Court, a family dispute took a serious turn as a man was fined £520 for battering his own uncle with a metal bar. Eamon Reilly, aged 41, admitted to assaulting his uncle and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner on Greenrig Road, Lesmahagow, in an altercation that took place on December 10 the previous year.

While Reilly was accused of driving his pickup truck dangerously towards his uncle and cousin, putting their lives at risk, the court accepted his not guilty pleas to those charges. Additionally, an allegation that he repeatedly rammed another vehicle was also dropped during the proceedings.

According to Kevin Morrow, the prosecutor, the confrontation escalated when Reilly encountered his relatives on a narrow road. Amidst shouting, swearing, and threats exchanged between the parties, a physical confrontation ensued as both parties got out of their vehicles. In a moment of heated conflict, Reilly grabbed a metal bar from his truck and struck his uncle on the arm, leading to the victim requiring stitches for a cut on his arm.

Although the reason behind the family dispute was not disclosed in court, Reilly’s defence lawyer, Archie Hill, emphasised that the situation had been resolved within the family. Hill expressed regret on behalf of his client, highlighting that Reilly had no prior record of such actions and was apologetic for his behaviour. He further mentioned that Reilly, who receives disability benefits, resides with his partner.

Sheriff Tony McGlennan acknowledged that Reilly had admitted to lesser charges, noting the presence of verbal provocation during the incident. Stressing the importance of upholding the law and avoiding vigilante behaviour, McGlennan stated, “Whatever the family dispute, you don’t have licence to act in this way.”

In conclusion, the court proceedings shed light on the consequences of letting conflicts escalate, underscoring the necessity of restraint and legal recourse in resolving disputes within families.
