Fed-up Dumbarton mum withholding rent after three year wait for home repairs

A frustrated mother from Dumbarton is taking a stand by withholding her rent after waiting for over three years for essential repairs to her family home. Marie Brady, along with her sons Declan, 16, and Logan, 13, moved to their property on Lomond Drive in 2021. At the time of moving in, Marie had expressed concerns about the necessary repairs that were supposed to be completed before their arrival. However, despite the long wait, Caledonia Housing Association has still not carried out the repairs, leaving the house plagued with damp issues that prevent even hanging pictures on the walls.
Marie Brady has decided to take drastic action by falling into rent arrears as she refuses to pay until the repairs are addressed. She has been proactive in seeking a resolution, reaching out to various authorities such as environmental health, the Scottish Housing Ombudsman, and even her local politicians including Jackie Baillie. Expressing her frustration, Marie stated, “I have been made to live in conditions that are not acceptable and still expected to pay my rent and it has taken its toll.”
Caledonia Housing Association responded to the situation, acknowledging that they have not met the expected standards for Ms Brady. They assured that their area team is collaborating with contractors to expedite the necessary repairs as soon as possible.
The ordeal faced by Marie Brady sheds light on the challenges some tenants endure when essential repairs are delayed or neglected by housing providers. In such situations, it is vital for tenants to be aware of their rights and to seek appropriate support to ensure their living conditions are safe and habitable.
In summary, Marie Brady’s courageous decision to withhold rent in the face of prolonged neglect of essential repairs highlights the struggles faced by tenants in ensuring decent living conditions. This case underscores the importance of effective communication and prompt action from housing providers to address maintenance issues promptly and uphold the well-being of their tenants.
