GP Issues Warning Over Unhygienic Gym Habits That Can Lead to Illness

Exercise is vital for maintaining overall health, with numerous benefits for both the mind and body. However, a health expert has highlighted the importance of maintaining clean exercise habits, particularly during the winter months, to avoid falling ill. GP and wellness Doctor Aarthi Sinha has issued a warning about the potential risks of unhygienic practices in the gym that could result in diarrhoea and vomiting.

Dr. Sinha emphasises the necessity of washing and airing water bottles regularly to prevent the accumulation of harmful bacteria. Failing to clean water bottles can lead to the growth of germs on the bottle’s surface, which can contaminate the water inside and cause gastrointestinal issues when consumed. She advises gym-goers to clean their water bottles daily, similar to how cups and mugs are washed, and recommends periodic cleaning with sterilising tablets for added protection.

In addition to water bottle hygiene, Dr. Sinha outlines several other essential habits to avoid at the gym to minimise the risk of contracting illnesses. Using shared gym mats without proper cleaning can expose individuals to various germs and bacteria present on the surface. Re-wearing sweaty gym clothes without washing them can lead to skin infections due to the accumulation of sweat and dead skin cells. It is recommended to wash gym clothes inside out on a low temperature without using fabric softeners.

Furthermore, gym equipment should be wiped down before and after use to reduce the spread of bacteria, as studies have shown high bacterial contamination levels on gym equipment. Dr. Sinha also warns against using gym swimsuit dryers, as they can harbour bacteria such as E. coli, which can cause digestive issues and infections. By adopting these hygienic practices, gym enthusiasts can safeguard their health and well-being during their workout sessions.

In summary, maintaining a clean and hygienic environment in the gym is essential for preventing the spread of germs and bacteria that can lead to illness. By incorporating simple hygiene practices such as regular cleaning of water bottles, gym mats, clothes, and equipment, individuals can protect themselves from gastrointestinal issues and skin infections. Prioritising hygiene in the gym is crucial for ensuring a safe and healthy exercise experience, especially during the winter season.
