Grandad battered to death by bitter Everton fan grandson after watching Man City defeat

An Everton fan named Ryan Cullen, aged 35, brutally attacked his 73-year-old grandfather, Brian Cullen, leading to the elderly man’s tragic death after watching a football match together. The assault occurred after Everton’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City. The incident took place at Brian Cullen’s home in Midghall Street, where Ryan Cullen punched his grandfather in the face and banged his head on a headboard. Brian Cullen sustained severe injuries from the attack and tragically passed away two weeks later due to blunt chest trauma and sepsis.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Ryan Cullen had been battling mental health issues and drug use following the breakdown of his marriage. His grandmother, Anne Cullen, had supported him through rehab attempts, but he relapsed each time. Ryan Cullen had spent the night at his grandparents’ home before the assault occurred, with the family noticing his unusual behaviour and aggression.
Despite the severity of Brian Cullen’s injuries, he initially did not want to involve the police. However, his health deteriorated, leading to his untimely death. Ryan Cullen was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage shortly after the incident. He admitted to the assault during the court proceedings and expressed remorse for his actions. Ryan Cullen was sentenced to a five-year section 45a hybrid order, involving initial treatment in a psychiatric hospital before potential transfer to prison.
The tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of unchecked mental health issues and substance abuse. It serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking help and support for those struggling with such challenges to prevent similar tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
