Historic Dumfries library to close for several months for refurbishment

Historic Ewart Library in Dumfries Set to Close for Refurbishment
In a bid to undergo extensive refurbishment, the historic Ewart Library in Dumfries is set to close its doors for several months starting early January next year. Celebrating its 120th anniversary recently, the library will shut down for approximately four months to facilitate necessary renovation works. As part of the closure, the Georgetown and Lochthorn libraries will have extended opening hours, while the North West Community Campus customer service centre will remain available for patrons.
Originally funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and opened in 1904 on land donated by Miss McKie, the Ewart Library stands as an iconic building on Catherine Street. Named after former Dumfries MP William Ewart, who championed the introduction of the Free Libraries Acts in England and Scotland in the mid-19th century, the library has played a significant role in the community over the years.
The closure of the Ewart Library, scheduled for January 6, 2025, is expected to last four months in order to complete the planned refurbishment. During this period, appointments can be made at the Georgetown, Lochthorn, and North West Community Campus customer service centres by contacting 030 33 33 3004. For inquiries, the heritage service can be reached at heritage@dumgal.gov.uk and the library service at yourlibrary@dumgal.gov.uk.
In conclusion, the upcoming closure of the Ewart Library marks a significant chapter in its rich history, as efforts are made to enhance its facilities and services for the benefit of the community. The library’s legacy as a hub of knowledge and culture in Dumfries is set to continue, with the refurbishment aimed at ensuring its preservation and modernisation for generations to come.
