Incredible poppy trails installed on Dumfries and Galloway buildings

In Dumfries and Galloway, incredible poppy trails have been installed on two iconic buildings, adding a touch of artistry and remembrance to the area. Crafted by talented individuals in Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas, the poppies stand as a tribute ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

One of the installations can be found adorning MacLellan’s Castle in Kirkcudbright, while the other embellishes the library and art gallery in Castle Douglas. The idea for the poppy trail in Kirkcudbright was initiated by Irene Henry, known for her creative postbox toppers, who felt it was essential to honour all those who have served. An appeal was made for 2,000 poppies, and the response was overwhelming, with over 6,000 poppies contributed by the community, including some who made over 500 each. These poppies were carefully sewn onto backing material by a dedicated group of volunteers in the local church hall.

The poignant installations not only feature red poppies but also include purple flowers to remember the animals who served in wars and white poppies symbolising hope for peace in the world. Historic Environment Scotland approved the project and assisted in installing the poppies on the castle in Kirkcudbright. In addition, a silhouette of a soldier crafted by Andy Campbell adds to the meaningful display.

In Castle Douglas, more than 1,400 poppies were included in the installation, thanks to the efforts of Angela Orro and the crafters attending her sessions. These poppies were delicately sewn onto mesh and then skillfully hung by firefighters from the local fire station. The poppy trail will grace the buildings throughout November, offering a poignant and fitting backdrop for reflection and remembrance.

In summary, the beautiful poppy trails installed on Dumfries and Galloway buildings serve as a touching tribute to those who have served and sacrificed. The community’s collaborative efforts in creating and installing these artworks reflect a deep sense of respect and remembrance for our history and those who have bravely served their country. The installations not only honour human veterans but also pay homage to the animals who played a vital role in wars. The poppy trails are a visual reminder of the importance of remembrance and the pursuit of peace in the world.
