A Scottish man’s jail death, who was convicted of murdering his vulnerable friend in his own home, is under investigation. Darrin Callander was serving a life sentence after brutally attacking Brian Scott, 54, in Dumfries back in April 2013. Callander punched, kicked, and stomped on Scott, leaving him with severe injuries including smashed ribs, a ruptured spleen, fractured vertebrae, and brain damage, which ultimately led to Scott’s death. The murderer passed away on September 18, 2021, at HMP Shotts near Glasgow at the age of 41.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) has been ordered to look into Callander’s death in prison. The Procurator Fiscal, Les Brown, disclosed that the investigative process will commence with a preliminary hearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court on January 7, 2025. Callander had been sentenced to a minimum of 14 and a half years for the murder of his friend known as Tucker. The incident occurred during a drinking session when Callander suddenly attacked Scott, who was in poor health and used a walking stick, after which Callander ignored pleas to stop and continued the assault for five minutes. The following day, Callander found Scott’s lifeless body in the house but did not report it to emergency services.

Callander’s brutal actions resulted in him being charged with murder and receiving an extended sentence after an appeal. The Court of Criminal Appeal highlighted the vicious and unprovoked nature of Callander’s attack, leading to an additional five-year extension to his minimum sentence. The investigation into Callander’s prison death comes as a further chapter in a tragic and violent saga that began with the senseless murder of his friend in 2013.

In conclusion, the prison death of Darrin Callander, the Scottish killer convicted of murdering his vulnerable friend, has sparked an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
