Journalist tells how she ‘learned to live again’ after horror horse riding accident left her paralysed

Journalist Melanie Reid has shared her inspiring journey of resilience and learning to live again after a devastating horse riding accident fourteen-and-a-half years ago that left her tetraplegic. Speaking about the ongoing impact of life in a wheelchair and the process of relearning life skills through occupational therapy, Melanie’s story sheds light on the transformative power of occupational therapy as she marks Occupational Therapy Week 2024.
Reflecting on her life before the accident, Melanie described herself as sporty, the main breadwinner of her home, and physically strong. The accident had a profound impact on every aspect of her life, from her body and emotions to her family dynamics and daily activities. Melanie highlighted the vital role occupational therapists played in helping her rebuild her life and regain independence.
Prior to fully grasping the severity of her injuries, Melanie initially believed she would fully recover. However, over the past 14 years, she faced the reality of a long and challenging road towards acceptance and adaptation to her new life. Despite the constant mourning for the person she used to be, Melanie has found a way to live with her new reality and embrace her current circumstances.
Melanie emphasised the significant challenges beyond just physical mobility that come with paralysis, such as challenges with bladder and bowel functions. Occupational therapists, like Leslie and Amanda, played a crucial role in Melanie’s rehabilitation by providing tools and knowledge to navigate daily tasks independently, from hand movements and self-care to adapting her home environment to suit her wheelchair.
Through intense therapy and determination, Melanie progressed from being completely paralysed to leading a largely independent life, crediting occupational therapists for their invaluable support in helping her navigate the complexities of life post-accident. The Royal College of Occupational Therapists advocates for comprehensive rehabilitation services to ensure everyone in need can access occupational therapy to enhance their health and wellbeing.
Occupational therapy is not just about physical rehabilitation but also about empowering individuals to manage their changing needs and lead fulfilling lives. Melanie’s story stands as a testament to the resilience and transformative impact of occupational therapy in helping individuals embrace new beginnings and navigate life-altering challenges.
