Julie Christie from Dumfries & Stewartry Women’s Aid speaks to Rotary club members

Julie Christie, the CEO of Dumfries & Stewartry Women’s Aid, delivered a poignant and eye-opening talk to members of the Lockerbie and District Rotary Club. Titled “An Evening with Julie,” her speech shed light on the urgent need for increased understanding and support for individuals experiencing domestic abuse. With nearly 30 years of experience in the field, Julie shared harrowing stories of abuse that she encounters daily, highlighting a concerning societal breakdown. She emphasized that demand for support services has surged, particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Established in 1979, the first refuge provided by Dumfries & Stewartry Women’s Aid consisted of a nine-bedroom complex that was quickly filled. Over the years, the organisation has expanded to offer 15 fully furnished flats and a standalone bungalow to accommodate families with disabilities. The primary objective remains to offer a safe haven for those in need, with round-the-clock security staff ensuring the residents’ safety.

Julie also touched upon the various ramifications of abuse, including its links to alcohol, drugs, and mental health issues. She pointed out the insidious nature of emotional and psychological abuse, noting that many survivors often blame themselves for the mistreatment they endure. In many cases, women endure severe abuse before mustering the courage to escape with their children, often leaving behind everything else.

Today, the Dumfriesshire and Stewartry Women’s Aid centre not only provides refuge but also offers outreach services and dedicated support for children affected by domestic abuse. Following Julie’s talk, a robust question and answer session took place, underscoring the importance of raising awareness about the challenges faced by survivors of domestic abuse. President Ivan Kennedy, who is also a member of the Children’s Panel, extended a heartfelt vote of thanks to Julie for her enlightening presentation.
