Killer who doused girlfriend in petrol and set her on fire after fight jailed for life

A man who cruelly poured petrol on his girlfriend and set her on fire during an argument has been sentenced to life in prison. Leigh Pateman, aged 45, was jailed for 17 years and 10 months after admitting to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to 41-year-old Ellen Marshall. Tragically, despite initially surviving the horrific attack, Ellen passed away nearly two years later due to her injuries, leading to a murder charge against Pateman. The court heard that the victim suffered extensive burns and other serious injuries, enduring excruciating pain and suffering as a result of the attack.

The disturbing incident took place in April 2021, when emergency services were called to the couple’s shared home after neighbours reported a fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found Ellen lying on the floor with severe burns, struggling to speak and protect her abuser. It was evident that she had endured significant harm, including burns to her face, neck, abdomen, chest, and limbs. Despite her strong will to survive, Ellen’s injuries were so severe that she required extensive medical care, leading to her eventual passing in March 2023 from pneumonia caused by the inflicted injuries.

During the trial, the court heard heartbreaking testimonies, including a statement from Ellen’s daughter, Paige Clarke, who expressed the pain and suffering her mother endured in the aftermath of the attack. The court was also informed of Pateman’s history of threats towards Ellen, including a previous incident where he had threatened to set her on fire. Witnesses recalled hearing screams and seeing Pateman attempting to extinguish the flames on Ellen as emergency services arrived at the scene.

In sentencing Pateman to life in prison with a minimum term of 23 years and 145 days before parole consideration, Judge Simon Hirst highlighted the barbarity of the crime and the immense suffering inflicted upon Ellen. The court was moved by the impact statement shared by Paige Clarke, describing her mother’s unwavering strength and the heartbreaking consequences of the attack on her family.

This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. The sentence handed down to Pateman reflects the severity of his crime and the irreparable harm caused to Ellen and her loved ones. The hope is that justice brings some solace to those affected by this senseless act of violence.
