Labour claims SNP has ‘let Glasgow down for too long’ after clean sweep of by-election wins

Labour has accused the SNP of “letting Glasgow down for too long” after winning a clean sweep of by-elections. Anas Sarwar, the leader of the Scottish Labour Party, declared that his party would advocate for Scotland’s largest city following the election of three new councillors in the Maryhill, Glasgow North East, and Drumchapel wards. This victory comes as a positive development for Labour, particularly in light of recent criticism over the UK Government’s decision to means-test the Winter Fuel Payment for pensioners.

Glasgow City Council is currently governed by a minority SNP administration with backing from the Scottish Greens. However, the council has been under scrutiny from local residents due to issues such as the poor state of roads and pavements, complaints about missed refuse collections, and concerns about declining street cleanliness. Sarwar emphasised that the SNP had failed Glasgow and that Scottish Labour would prioritize the city’s needs.

Sarwar celebrated the election results, stating, “This fantastic set of results shows Scots are putting their trust in Scottish Labour to deliver a change in direction.” He highlighted the new Labour councillors as strong advocates for their respective communities and reiterated the party’s commitment to standing up for Glasgow. Notably, Labour had previously secured all constituencies in Glasgow from the SNP during the general election in July, underscoring the city’s significance as a key battleground for future political contests.

Despite the victories, the by-elections saw low voter turnout in each ward, with only 12% of eligible voters in Glasgow North East participating in the elections. Looking ahead to the next Holyrood poll in 2026, Labour aims to build on its recent successes and continue addressing the needs and concerns of Glasgow residents.
