Man battered neighbour with metal pole and broke his arm

A man appeared in Airdrie Sheriff Court this week after assaulting his neighbour with a metal pole, resulting in a broken arm. Ross Millar, 37, from Jarvie Avenue, Plains, had been helping the 20-year-old neighbour, who was bleeding and carrying two knives, to return home when the violent incident occurred in Barlandfauld Street, Kilsyth, on March 30. The victim, with blood-covered hands and bare feet, had armed himself with knives before Millar armed himself with a metal pole to escort the man. A neighbour witnessed the victim shouting, “I’m not scared to die,” as they headed towards his home. When they arrived, Millar pointed the metal pole at the victim and struck him multiple times with it, resulting in a fractured arm.
The incident was captured by a neighbour’s Ring doorbell camera, and footage of the assault was presented in court. The victim suffered injuries necessitating hospital treatment, with swelling and a fracture to his hand and forearm. Millar claimed that the victim had approached him with knives during questioning by police officers. Prosecution revealed that the victim had tried to defend himself during the attack, apologising to Millar in the process. Despite claiming there was significant mitigation in the case, Millar’s sentencing was postponed for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment.
