Man charged after ‘attack’ on seals in Scots seaside town

A man has been charged after an ‘attack’ on seals in a Scots seaside town. The incident occurred in North Berwick on Thursday, November 28, 2024, leading to an investigation by Police Scotland after they were notified of the alleged attack on the mammals around 4.45pm that day. The incident reportedly took place at North Berwick Harbour on the town’s Victoria Road, with one of the seal pups found at the scene while the other went missing post the attack.
Police Scotland confirmed the investigation shortly after being notified. A spokesperson from the police force stated, “About 4.45pm on Thursday, November 28, 2024, we received a report of two seals having been attacked by a man near the harbour at Victoria Road, North Berwick. Officers responded and contacted appropriate agencies for the seals’ welfare, with ongoing inquiries into the matter.” Following the incident, an arrest has been made with a 61-year-old man now facing charges in connection with the seal attack.
The East Lothian Police Scotland Facebook page announced, “A 61-year-old man has been charged in connection with a report of two seals having been attacked in North Berwick around 4.45pm on Thursday, November 28, 2024. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for further action.” The decision on whether the man will be prosecuted lies with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
