Man had jaw broken in unprovoked attack by ex-girlfriend’s new partner

A man was attacked in an unprovoked incident by his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, resulting in his jaw being broken. The assailant, Nathan McTaggart, leaped over a fence in a pub’s beer garden and unexpectedly struck the victim. McTaggart, 22, from South Place, Bellshill, appeared in Hamilton Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to the assault that caused severe injury and permanent impairment to the victim in Old Edinburgh Road, Viewpark, on June 17 the previous year.

During the court hearing, Rebecca Clark, the prosecutor, revealed that the victim and his girlfriend were conversing with a friend in the beer garden when McTaggart approached them and made a comment. Suddenly and without any warning, McTaggart viciously struck the victim, causing him to lose his glasses and stumble. The impact resulted in two fractures to the victim’s jaw, requiring surgery under general anaesthetic with plates inserted to repair the damage. Unfortunately, complications ensued, leading to further surgeries due to infections.

The victim continues to suffer from no feeling in his chin and bottom lip, along with difficulties in mouth movement and eating. The incident has also taken a toll on his mental well-being, causing nightmares, sleep disturbances, social withdrawal, and fear of future attacks. Sheriff Louise Gallacher has deferred McTaggart’s sentencing until the following month for additional background checks, despite his lack of prior convictions.
