Man had stand-off with police at Strathaven home after reports of domestic disturbance

A man in Strathaven had a confrontation with the police at his residence following reports of a domestic disturbance. Craig Richardson, 40, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted to engaging in threatening or abusive behaviour in his ground floor flat in Park Crescent on April 21. Richardson warned the officers that they would need to force their way in, but they were able to gain entry with a key from his mother. A struggle ensued during Richardson’s arrest.

Apart from the charge of threatening behaviour, Richardson also pleaded guilty to resisting arrest. However, the allegation of abducting his partner and holding her against her will at the flat was withdrawn. The incident unfolded when police responded to a call about a verbal altercation between Richardson and his partner witnessed by a neighbour at around 4.30pm. Upon their arrival, Richardson was uncooperative, prompting additional officers to join the scene. Despite his reluctance to leave the premises, officers managed to open the door, leading to a violent resistance from Richardson.

In addition to the above charges, Richardson also admitted breaching bail conditions by contacting his partner at a different address in Hill Street, Hamilton, on June 18. Richardson’s defence lawyer, Scott Jones, highlighted his client’s struggles with drug, alcohol, and mental health issues. Richardson had been placed on a court-mandated drug treatment and testing order in April. Sentencing has been deferred by Sheriff Colin Dunipace until the following month for the preparation of background reports. Richardson, who has been in custody since June, remains remanded.

As per reports, Richardson’s case sheds light on the complexity of domestic disturbances and the challenges faced by individuals dealing with addiction and mental health issues. Such incidents not only put individuals at risk but also pose a threat to law enforcement officers tasked with intervening in volatile situations.
