Murder suspect flew to Scotland as police waited at wrong airport, court hears

A suspect has flown to Scotland while police were waiting for him at Bucharest airport in connection with an alleged violent street attack, a court has revealed. Ionut Danca was initially accused of assaulting a Canadian tourist, who tragically passed away after being attacked on Dublin’s O’Connell Street on June 23, 2023. However, his case has now been upgraded to a murder charge. The Irish Mirror reports that a file was submitted to the Irish Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, who decided Danca would face the more serious charge over the alleged attack on Neno Dolmajian.

During a hearing at Dublin District Court, Judge Gerard Jones noted that the State required time to prepare the book of evidence for the trial. Danca, a 24-year-old Romanian construction worker living in Dublin, received High Court bail. He was set to appear in court in January to be served with the book of evidence and for a return-for-trial order to be granted. Initially charged with assault causing harm to Mr. Dolmajian, that charge was later replaced with the murder allegation.

Mr. Dolmajian, a Canadian from Montreal, was rushed to Mater Hospital in Dublin in an “unresponsive” state and unfortunately did not recover, passing away on July 2. At an earlier bail hearing on the assault charge, Detective Sergeant Eoghan Byrne described how the incident unfolded, with Danca allegedly fleeing the country for two days. Despite officers waiting for him at Bucharest airport, Danca managed to fly to Belfast, then Edinburgh, and onwards to Naples, evading authorities.

The court heard that Danca’s Dublin address was found emptied, with belongings packed up indicating an intention to leave Ireland permanently. Detective Sergeant Byrne acknowledged that Danca had no prior criminal convictions and had lived and worked in Ireland for six years before voluntarily returning following discussions. Another individual is also facing court proceedings in connection with the incident, with their case resuming in January.
