New sporting memory group in Cambuslang is a great way to share your stories and make friends

A new Sporting Memories group has recently been established in Cambuslang, providing a great opportunity for sports enthusiasts to come together, share stories, and forge new friendships. The group, initiated by the Clyde FC Community Foundation, is targeted towards individuals aged over 50 who reside in the local area and have a passion for football and other sports, regardless of their team allegiances. Participants are encouraged to join in engaging conversations about sports and local history, offering a chance to connect with others in the community.
The Sporting Memories Club at Cambuslang welcomes anyone who wishes to share their personal sports experiences and insights about the area’s history. Whether you have stories to tell or simply enjoy listening, the club offers a welcoming environment. Clyde FC historian Gordon Sydney, fondly known as Syd, is actively involved in the group and shares his wealth of knowledge about the club’s legacy spanning several decades.
The concept of Sporting Memories originated in Scotland through the efforts of Falkirk FC historian, Michael White, aimed initially at individuals with dementia. The initiative has since expanded to include older sports enthusiasts who may be socially isolated but possess a wealth of memories and experiences to share. Beyond sports-related discussions, the group also delves into social memories, such as recalling past holidays or music preferences.
Alan White, the charity development manager at Clyde FC Community Foundation, highlights the importance of fostering connections and combating isolation through the Sporting Memories Club. As the group evolves, plans are underway to incorporate various activities for participants to enjoy. The club’s partnership manager, Donna Mackey, emphasises the inclusivity of the group, extending a warm invitation to all sports fans and Clyde supporters to join the weekly sessions at Eastfield Community Centre in Cambuslang.
Meetings take place every Friday from 10am to 11.30am at the Eastfield Community Centre, providing a casual setting for sharing stories, connecting with others, and enjoying complimentary refreshments. For those interested in attending, simply show up on a Friday or reach out to Alan White via email at alan.white@clydefc.co.uk. The Sporting Memories Club offers a unique opportunity to engage with like-minded individuals, celebrate shared experiences, and contribute to a vibrant community network.
