North Lanarkshire Sees Domestic Abuse Incidents Above National Average
New statistics released by the Scottish Government have unveiled that the rate of domestic abuse incidents recorded by police in North Lanarkshire surpasses the Scottish average. The figures show that there were 127 crimes recorded per 10,000 of the population in North Lanarkshire, compared to the national average of 116 incidents. In contrast, South Lanarkshire reported incidents in line with the national average at 116. The definition of domestic abuse used by Police Scotland encompasses various forms of abuse like physical, verbal, sexual, psychological, or financial abuse within the context of a relationship.
Across Scotland, there were a total of 63,867 incidents of domestic abuse recorded in 2023-24, marking a three percent increase from the previous year. This uptick is the first increase observed since 2020-21, during the peak of the Covid pandemic. Common assault emerged as the most frequently recorded crime within domestic abuse incidents, constituting 31% of all crimes and offences reported.
Locally, Dundee City, West Dunbartonshire, and West Lothian recorded the highest incident rates. Gender-wise, around 81% of incidents involved a female victim and a male suspected perpetrator. Notably, 15% of incidents had a male victim and a female suspected perpetrator. The data also revealed that 90% of all domestic abuse incidents occurred within a home or dwelling, with half of the victims being ex-partners.
Siobhian Brown MSP, Victims Minister, condemned domestic abuse as abhorrent and highlighted the importance of reporting such incidents. The Scottish Government is actively working towards making it easier to report domestic abuse by implementing changes in the justice system. Support initiatives, such as funding Women’s Aid groups and the Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage Helpline, aim to provide essential services and assistance to victims.
