Pensioner chokes to death on Christmas dinner in hotel tragedy


A tragic incident occurred at the Devoncourt Hotel in Exmouth, where pensioner Douglas Gregory choked to death on his Christmas dinner. The 83-year-old was enjoying a meal at the hotel on December 1 when he suddenly needed urgent medical assistance. Despite the efforts of hotel staff and emergency services, Mr. Gregory passed away at the scene around 1:25 pm.

An inquest into his death has since been opened at the Exeter Coroner’s Court. During the initial hearing, it was disclosed that Mr. Gregory, originally from Salford and residing in Minehead, was at the hotel having his Christmas meal when he started struggling to breathe. Despite the best attempts to help him, he was declared deceased, with the cause of death reported as inhalation of food material.

The inquest has been adjourned for a comprehensive hearing at a later date. The Devoncourt Hotel had faced proposals for demolition to make way for apartments and a smaller hotel, but these plans were rejected after significant opposition. Although the hotel was spared demolition, its future remains uncertain.
