Perth artist’s city mural is a thank you to his wife’s carers

A touching mural has been unveiled in Perth city centre by local artist, Ian Cuthbert Imrie, as a tribute to the carers who looked after his late wife, Margaret. Margaret, who sadly passed away in October, had received care from NHS and Perth and Kinross Council workers after suffering a stroke in 2022. Spending a year in Perth Royal Infirmary before returning home to Bridge of Earn, Margaret’s care inspired Ian to create the mural in her memory.
The mural, measuring 16ft by 8ft, features a depiction of impressionist artist Claude Monet with his iconic water lilies, inspired by one of Margaret’s favourite paintings. Ian expressed his gratitude towards the healthcare and social work professionals who supported Margaret during her final years, stating, “I really cannot thank everyone involved in Margaret’s care enough.” Born in Muirton, Ian has a history of creating murals in Perth, including tributes to music legends and a Banksy-inspired piece.
Using acrylic paint on laminate panels, Ian painted the Monet piece at his home in Bridge of Earn before installing it near Perth’s Mill Street car park. The mural can be easily dismantled and moved, showcasing Ian’s dedication to honouring his late wife’s memory. Reflecting on Margaret’s admiration for Monet’s work, Ian shared, “If she were still here today I expect she would have said: ‘that’s lovely Ian.’”
In a heartwarming gesture of appreciation, Ian’s mural stands as a public expression of gratitude to the caregivers who supported Margaret during her illness. The artwork not only commemorates Margaret’s love for Monet’s paintings but also serves as a lasting tribute to the kindness and dedication of healthcare and social work professionals in Perth.
