Perth woman says belly dancing was a “lifeline” during the pandemic

A Perth woman has found solace and empowerment through belly dancing during the challenges of the pandemic. Emily Stewart, a 36-year-old mother-of-one, discovered Fat Chance Belly Dance (FCBD) a decade ago and hasn’t looked back since. This unique style of dance incorporates elements from various cultures like India, Spain, Africa, and the Middle East, celebrating women’s strength and beauty as they dance together. Originally known as American Tribal Style, FCBD has been a part of Emily’s life, helping her cope with ADHD, anxiety, and finding a sense of freedom and joy through movement.

Emily shared, “I have always loved to dance, ever since I was a child. It feels like life to me. It feels like freedom. When I’m tired it energises me. When I’m anxious, it’s soothing. When I’m happy, it’s joyful.” She highlighted the magical aspect of FCBD, connecting women beyond words, fostering an appreciation for the body, and boosting self-esteem and confidence. Through FCBD, Emily not only found a creative outlet but also a supportive community of lifelong friends worldwide.

As a project manager for a charity, Emily dances with the belly dancing troupe, Twisted Tails, performing across Scotland. She has become one of the three certified FCBD teachers in Scotland and recently launched Tribal Belly Dancing Classes for women in Perth. Amidst the pandemic, Emily described FCBD as a lifeline, providing gentle exercise, a boost in self-esteem, and a sense of sisterhood. She expressed how FCBD empowered her to take up space, stand tall, and be proud of herself, leading her to actively support women’s rights organisations.

The classes, starting on Tuesday, October 29 at the Dance Bank in Burghmuir Road, offer women a chance to explore the art of Tribal Belly Dancing. Emily’s journey with FCBD exemplifies the transformative power of dance, not just as a physical activity but as a means of self-expression, confidence-building, and community connection.
