Rape crimes rising in Perth and Kinross as 40 reports made to police in 6 months


Rape crimes are on the rise in Perth and Kinross, with a concerning 40 reports made to the police in just six months. This marks a 54 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, where there were only 26 reports. Shockingly, all the victims in these cases knew the suspects involved. The statistics were revealed in the police Mid-Year Performance Report for the region, covering the period from April 1, 2024, to September 30, 2024.

Detection rates for these crimes have also dropped, from 46 per cent last year to 38 per cent this year, a decrease of nine per cent. Additionally, there has been a 23 per cent fall in detection rates compared to the five-year average. These alarming figures were presented to the Perth and Kinross Council’s Housing and Social Wellbeing Committee on Wednesday, November 27.

Addressing the concerning increase in rapes and the decline in detection rates, Perth City Centre Liberal Democrat councillor Peter Barrett questioned the staffing levels in Tayside compared to other divisions to handle the reported cases. Chief Superintendent Nicola Russell from Tayside assured that there are trained Senior Investigating Officers in place to conduct thorough investigations into such serious crimes.

Chief Superintendent Russell also highlighted that additional national support can be brought in if needed for significant or complex cases. Despite the worrying statistics, she stressed the importance of creating a safe environment for victims to come forward and report sexual crimes. Chief Superintendent Russell acknowledged that there is still much work to be done in this area to ensure victims feel supported in reporting these offences.

In conclusion, the rise in rape crimes and the decrease in detection rates in Perth and Kinross are concerning trends that require immediate attention and action. Authorities must work diligently to not only investigate these crimes effectively but also create a supportive environment for victims to report such heinous acts.
